June 13th-17th

Worksheets that Jem did, learning about Right Hand and Left Hand, and circling the words that rhyme.

Playing at the park, and walking down the 'Story Trail'.
We do this about two or three times a week lately.

Jem has been doing basic math problems nearly every day, and I started teaching him some very simple division, as well as teaching him about even and odd numbers. He did more copy work and drawing to go with it. He told me a story he had made up and I helped him copy it into his notebook. Other then that we have watched a bunch of phonic songs on youtube, and two Moody Science Videos 'Experience with a Eel' and 'Facts of Faith'

Week of June 6-10

Monday

Lots of helping mom today! Jem cleaned and organized his room on his own, and helped with laundry and other chores. I read a few books out loud to them while the laundry was being folded. Two stories from the 'Children's Book of Virtues', 'The Cat in the Hat' and 'The Honey Hunt'. There was a lot of creative play in the new sandbox for the rest of the day.

Tuesday

Jem used his flash cards to make up addition and subtraction problems and then told me his answers, 100% correct. He crafted a bull with play dough very well and told me what he wanted to write about it. He copied his short story into his notebook. He drew a picture of the Ark and also made one out of playdough. They have been watching the cows and bull in our pasture a lot and so I have been counting that as our nature study.  I read aloud to Jem from the Wind in the Willows, and in the evening the children enjoyed a few books read by daddy before bed.

Wednesday

Jem did a math worksheet, and we talked about odd and even numbers.
Two more chapters from The Wind in the Willows were enjoyed by us all. Jem pretended to dig up a bone in the sand box, (it was a long root from a tree) we talked a bit about archaeology together. After making a trench we poured water into it and Jem learnt that water always flows down to the lowest spot. And then they proceeded to make a mud bath for themselves! In the evening we watched a YouTube video about archaeology called; Archaeology Adventures in the Holyland for kids with Gary Byers

Thursday

Jem did a 'tracing the alphabet' worksheet. We walked to the park and explored the forest trail there. Finished 'The Wind in the Willows' during laundry time. They helped clean and vacuum the house so they could have a friend over in the evening!

Friday

Worked on a shapes worksheet. Reviewed the Alphabet, and counting to 60 together. Made play dough cookies. I started a simple Buddy System, with Jem being buddies with Vienna, I am hoping this will help him work on his character, self-control and caring for others. So far so good, of course it's a novelty right now, so he is excited about it. I will be doing a bunch of reading aloud to the kids later this afternoon from our stack of library books.

Weekend Plans

Saturday we hope to go to the dump together and also pick up some sandbox sand, family day with Daddy, and I hope to let Jem help make a cake for Daddy as it is his birthday tomorrow.

Sunshine and Happy Children!

Thursday and Friday, June 2-3

On Thursday Jem made the cornbread for dinner, and Katie helped fry the ground beef.

Jem's finished poster board made from recycled cardboard box of course! He finished his unit study by telling Daddy all about what he learnt and then had the treat of watching Mighty Machines At the Dump show on YouTube.

On Thursday and Friday, Jem did some simple math problems, highlighted the words he knew in a magazine add, made his own sentence using his sight words and copied it into his notebook with a drawing, he also crafted a bird to go with his sentence made from play dough. We read some out of the Wind in the Willows. The kids caught a bird and had some fun looking at it, and when the poor thing died Jem discovered that it did not have any teeth... nature study :) and a good hand washing after!!

Some family pictures for Oma's enjoyment! :) Hi Mom!

Wednesday, June 1

We got in a pretty good homeschool day today!

 Art
Jem and Katie enjoyed painting with the new 'school' paints, Jem is making a poster board for his Garbage Study to show Daddy in a little presentation on Saturday or Sunday.

Unit Study
We read "Garbage Trucks" and learnt about the different types of garbage trucks there are, reviewed the new words we learnt about trash and such, what happens to garbage after it gets picked up,  lots of casual chatting about it all... Jem told me back a bunch of new knowledge he picked up from my reading to him (oral narration)

Reading/Writing
Using Jem's sight words I made a simple sentence and left him to read and copy it in his notebook. I have found he puts so much more thought into his work if I just leave him to figure it out on his own. When I would hold the sight word cards for him he would struggle a lot and look to me for help. But then I gave them to him as I was busy doing something else and to my amazement I overheard him rattle them off with no mistakes!

Math
Jem picked out some math flash cards for himself and did them with only one mistake. He counted to 20 on his own with no mistakes, and went on with a little help from me up to 30.

Nature Study/ P.E
Jem measured his bean plant again, and there was lots of running, swinging and jumping going on outside this morning.
