Garbage Unit Study

Who know garbage could be so interesting!?

We unofficially started our unity study today by reading the book "Here Comes the Garbage Barge" I was not expecting to enjoy it so much! This book is loosely based on a true story. I plan to read it again with the kids and show them on the map all the places the garbage barge went before it found a place to get rid of that smelly garbage. So there is a geography lesson right there where I was totally not expecting it! All the art work was made with garbage as well, very imaginative.  Besides editing out some slangy language, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book aloud!
We did no 'formal' school work today, but did enjoy trying out our binoculars, watching bumblebees through our magnifying glass, reading more about Huckle in Richard Scarry's 'Great Big SCHOOLHOUSE" , and practicing our counting from 1 - 20.
